WHAT ARE COOKIES AND FOR WHAT PURPOSES MAY THEY BE USED?

A “cookie” is a small text file created by websites on the user’s computer when the latter accesses a determined site, and has the purpose of storing and transmitting information. Cookies are sent from a web server (which is the computer on which the visited website is run) to the user’s browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.) and are memorised on the latter’s computer. They are then sent back to the website at the moment of subsequent visits.
Certain operations could not be carried out without the use of cookies which, in some cases, are therefore technically necessary. In other cases a site uses cookies to facilitate and aid the user in navigation, or to permit the latter to benefit from specifically requested services.
Cookies can also remain in the system for long periods and may contain a unique ID code. This allows sites that use them to trace the user’s navigation within the site, this for statistical or advertising purposes, which is to say to create a personalized user profile, setting out from the page the latter has visited and then showing and/or sending targeted advertising (so called Behavioural Advertising).
